What is the Gothic?
When I first thought of the word gothic the things that came to my mind were actually stuff that could possibly also be considered dystopian. For example I thought of the movies Batman, Superman, the Hunger Games etc. It turns out I was not wrong about that part. I also immediately thought of the stereotype people tend to put on those who are a little different. By different I mean a person who has exotic hair colors covering their eyes, a smoky eyeshadow, winged eyeliner, combat boots/doc martins, and ripped clothes, you name it. That part I was wrong on. Gothic is basically described as things that are creepy, and started back in the 12th century. When you look at a building, you can tell that it is gothic based on if the roofing is pointy. If it is rounded, it is considered more classical. It could go both ways though, for example if a structure is rounded but has rust, or moss growing on it, it would be considered both. Gore and grossness in some horror movie is not goth, but a city that is being destroyed with like a rebellious figure is goth. For novels its events or people that make the writing seem fearful, full of death, and gloomy but can also have a sense of romantic nature (a really good example would be Withering Heights).
