To Know or Not to Know?
What do I know about gothic literature? Very little. I could very well be wrong, but I think Frankenstein and Dracula are both books that are considered to be gothic literature. Have I read either one of them? Nope, they never interested me. Do I know the basic summary of the two books? Yes, they are two very famous books. That's all I can tell you about what I know. I love reading, and I love writing, which is why I chose this course. I really just hope to learn more about what gothic literature really is. However, I do have a few questions that I hope will be covered. Who were the most famous authors of this time? Where were some of these authors from? Why was some of the writing during this time so depressing (not sure if that's the right term for it)?

Yes, you are correct! Frankenstein and Dracula are key texts in the 19th century British Gothic genre. Even if you haven't read them, maybe you have seen the movies? We won't be reading them in this class, but we will talk about them, certainly. Your question about why they were so depressing is an interesting one, and one we will talk about a great deal. In fact, as we learn more about the Gothic genre, I think you will come to find it more inspiring than depressing.
